Tulsa, Oklahoma - The University of Tulsa women's rowing team Lightweight 8+ earned its first-ever national ranking today, as announced by US Rowing. The Golden Hurricane came in at No. 15 in the first poll this season.
"It is an honor," Head Coach Kevin Harris said. "To me, this shows that the coaches thought a lot of what we accomplished last year in the Lightweight 4+, and believe we will be able to transition into the Lightweight 8+ event."
Already this year, the Lightweight 8+, which consisted of Abigail Gorman, Kelsey Kean, Heather Brooks, Susan Stangl, Elizabeth Peterson, Anne Campbell, Kellyn Smith, Glynnis Aubrey and Catharine Brierre, turned in a time of 7:15.6 in the Lawless Cup, more than 29 seconds faster than the Bluejays Second Varsity 8+.
Last year, the Lightweight 4+ finished fifth with a time of 7:40.71 at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championship. Tulsa finished behind Loyola Marymount (7:15.51), Princeton (7:27.66), Fordham (7:33.96) and Wisconsin (7:34.09), and ahead of Georgetown (8:08.51) in the Grand Final.
TU's previous rowing ranking came in the Varsity 8+ in 2001, when the Golden Hurricane was ranked No. 25 by the same publication.
