Dallas, Texas -- SMU took a 14-7 halftime lead and held on to capture a 21-18 home victory on Saturday night in front of 19,329 fans at Gerald J. Ford Stadium. In an important Conference USA match-up, the Mustangs improved to 3-0 in league play, while the Hurricane fell to 1-2 in C-USA action. Mustangs are 4-2 overall, and Tulsa is 3-3.
SMU quarterback Kyle Padron threw for 381 yards and three TDs to lead SMU to the victory. SMU's offense put up 487 total yards, while the Tulsa gained 364 total yards. Despite forcing the Mustangs into two turnovers, the Golden Hurricane could not capitalize for the win. Tulsa's G.J. Kinne threw for 229 yards and rushed for 38 yards and two touchdowns.
Trailing 21-10, Kinne marched the Hurricane 69 yards in eight plays and ran the final three yards to put eight points on the board at 6:53 remaining in the game, as Kinne also completed a two-point pass to Charles Clay. Tulsa cut the SMU lead to three points, 21-18.
SMU took possession from its' own 9-yard line and on that final possession of the game, the Mustangs converted two third downs and held on to the ball for the final 6:53 to grab the victory.
SMU opened the second half with a 76-yard drive in just four plays to take a 21-14 lead at the 11:53 mark of the second quarter.
At the 9:05 mark of the third period, Tulsa put its first points on the board since its first possession of the game, but it was only three points on a Kevin Fitzpatrick 30-yard field goal. Tulsa's drive stalled at the SMU 23-yard line.
After the Hurricane defense held SMU on the first possession of the game, the Tulsa offense went 47 yards in seven plays in taking 2:55 off the clock for a 7-0 lead as Kinne ran in from six yards out.
The Tulsa defense got the ball back on a Dexter McCoil interception, as the Hurricane offense went to the SMU 28-yard line, but a Fitzpatrick 45-yard field goal was partially blocked.
SMU knotted the score 7-7 on a 22-yard touchdown pass from Kyle Padron to Darius Johnson at the 1:50 mark of the first quarter, capping a five-play, 72-yard drive.
The Mustangs took the lead 14-7 as Padron threw 32 yards to Cole Beasley, capping a 99-yard, eight-play drive in taking just 3:03 off the clock at the 3:54 mark of the second quarter.
At halftime, SMU held a 294 to 170-yard advantage in total offense. The Mustangs threw for 240 yards and rushed for 54 yards, while the Hurricane gained 120 passing yards and 50 rushing yards.
Tulsa returns home next week on October 16th for its Homecoming game against the Tulane Green Wave. Kick-off time is 6:05 pm.
