TULSA, Okla. - Tyler Henderson was named the Sports Imports/AVCA Division I and the CVU.com National Player of the Week after setting an NCAA record in the 25-point era with 45 kills at SMU last week, and averaging 7.91 kills per set for the week, the organizations announced Tuesday.
It is the second time in school history that a TU player has earned National Player of the Week honors. Julia Silva (2005-07) earned the award in 2007 from CVU.com.
Henderson, an Oklahoma City native, totaled 87 kills and 94.5 points (8.59 pts/set), and hit .428 in three Golden Hurricane Conference USA wins last week.
Most impressive about Henderson's week, however, was her epic performance at SMU Wednesday. She torched the previously 4-0 Mustangs for an amazing 45 kills (9.0 k/s), which set a new NCAA record for the 25-point era. It is also the ninth-highest total in NCAA history, and tied the C-USA record (originally set in 2004). In that match, she landed 47 percent of her attacks, and also tallied nine digs, four blocks and a service ace.
Henderson continued her dominant run through the weekend, recording 22 kills and hitting .514 Saturday against UAB. She added three digs, two blocks and an ace in the match. Sunday, she tallied 20 kills, with three blocks.
The Golden Hurricane (16-2, 7-0 C-USA), receiving votes in the latest AVCA Division I Coaches Top 25 Poll, plays host to cross-town rival Oral Roberts Wednesday at 7 p.m. It is believed to be the first time in school history Tulsa has received votes in the AVCA Coaches Poll.
Wednesday's match is TU's Dig for the Cure® match. October 13 is a TU campus-wide PINK OUT day, in which TU students, faculty and staff are encouraged to wear pink in honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The day will culminate with the volleyball match at 7 p.m. All fans in attendance are encouraged to wear pink, in an effort to come together to fight breast cancer. Pledge donations are being collected for every dig recorded, and sum donations will be accepted at the match. One hundred percent of the proceeds raised at the match will benefit the Susan G. Komen for the Cure® Tulsa affiliate.
