San Diego, California - The University of Tulsa's Varsity 8+ finished sixth in the Cal Cup Grand Final at the San Diego Crew Classic in Mission Bay Park in California.
The Golden Hurricane turned in a time of 7:22.39, 17 seconds behind first place San Diego, but less than a half-second behind fifth-place St. Joseph's.
"It was a great, tough race," Head Coach Kevin Harris said. "We struggled a little bit at the start and got down a boat-length of open water at the 1,000-meter mark, but we pulled back into the race. It was a great race experience and a great chance to race some crews we'll see again this season."
"It was a really good race for us," senior Aidan Leddy said. "We really raced our hearts out. We are happy with how we did, we are happy with how the whole team did and it was a great experience for all of us."
TU also captured a third-place Petite Final finish in the 2nd Varsity 8+. The Golden Hurricane recorded a time of 7:11.34, less than eight seconds behind first place Sacramento State.
"It was an excellent race," Harris said. "Watching this team grow in this race was fantastic. I am really proud of the way they fought throughout the race and hung in there despite being a really young crew."
"We definitely competed at a very high level," lone senior in the 2nd Varsity 8+ Jacqueline Malleo said. "We had a strong race in yesterday's heat and came out today and pushed ahead of San Diego in the final 250 meters to finish third."
Tulsa will return to the water on April 10th, as the Golden Hurricane hosts Central Oklahoma at the J. Bird Sr. Shell Nest in Catoosa, Okla.
