Tulsa, Oklahoma - The University of Tulsa women's rowing team won the Lawless Cup and earned six first-place finishes on Sunday morning at the Fifth Annual Lawless Cup Regatta on the Verdigris River at the J. Bird Sr. Shell Nest in Catoosa, Okla.
"I can't help but be pleased with the performance of our student athletes," Head Coach Kevin Harris said. "We were hoping to do well against Creighton because they are good team that is getting faster all the time, and watching Tulsa race today was really exciting. The weather cooperated today. We had a little bit of a head wind, 10-15 mph from the northwest, but it was beautiful for the fans and family that were on the shore. It is always awesome when the Golden Hurricane fans step up for the team. Having Dr. Lawless and his wife, Marcy, the Trustees, faculty members and fans come out and show their support for this team was fantastic."
TU began the day with a 23-second victory over Creighton in the Novice 8+ race, and then topped the Bluejays in the Varsity 8+, the premier event, in a time of 7:39.57 to retain the Lawless Cup. The Golden Hurricane has won the Lawless Cup all five years.
Tulsa's Novice 4+ `B' recorded the largest margin of victory, posting a time of 9:33.28, more than 65-seconds faster than Creighton. The Novice 4+ `A' followed moments later and tallied a 23-second win, while the Varsity 4+ `B' was 24-seconds quicker in their race.
The Jays registered their only first-place finish in the regatta in the Varsity 4+ `A' with a time of 8:52.19, 10.8 seconds ahead of the Golden Hurricane, which is ranked fifth in the south region by the NCAA in the event.
TU posted their sixth and final victory on the day in the Lightweight 4+, finishing 41-seconds faster than Creighton with a time of 9:16.87.
Following the regatta, TU honored its seven seniors - Jennifer Anderson, Erica Dean, Michelle Kadin, Krysti Knoche, Aidan Leddy, Jacqueline Malleo and Susan Stangl.
"This group of seniors has really seen this program grow, from before we had a boathouse to being ranked regionally and nationally," Harris said. "These seniors really helped us to get to this point and we are really going to miss them a whole bunch."
The Golden Hurricane will return to the water at the Central/South Rowing Championship, which is doubling as the Inaugural Conference USA Championship, on May 15-16 in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
