April 8, 2010
Tulsa, Oklahoma - Due to a threat of high winds, Saturday's Tulsa Rowing Duels will now begin at 7:30 am, instead of the original time of 9 am. Tulsa will compete against the University of Central Oklahoma and Oklahoma City University at the J. Bird Sr. Shell Nest in Catoosa, Okla.
The race day will now begin with three sculling events -- the Open 2x, Lightweight 2x and the Open 4x - with only Tulsa and OCU participating in these three races. Sculling events are races that has each rower with two oars.
The sweeping events, which means each rower will use only one oar, will feature all three schools in the Varsity 4+, Novice 8+ and Varsity 8+ and will begin with the Novice 8+ race at 8:45 am.
"We have struggled with the weather here in Tulsa as far as being able to get out on the water for race-day experience, but I feel like we are ready to rise to the challenge this weekend," Tulsa Head Coach Kevin Harris said. "This should be a fun interstate race that features a good Division II school, UCO, and one of the top sculling teams in the U.S., OCU."
This race gives the Golden Hurricane an opportunity to scull for the first time this season, which will help prepare TU for competition in the inaugural US Rowing Collegiate Championship in May.
