HOUSTON, Texas - The 31st-ranked Tulsa men's tennis team lost to conference rival No. 42 Rice, 4-3, on Friday afternoon at the Jake Hess Tennis Center in Houston, Texas. The Hurricane finishes its Texas road trip with a 0-2 record after falling to No. 5 Texas, 6-1, on Wednesday.
Tulsa (14-8) captured the doubles point with wins in the No. 2 and 3 positions. Marcelo Arevalo and Marko Ballok cruised past Bruno Rosa and Isamu Tachibana, 8-2, in the second flight, and Philip Stephens and Rusty Turpin clinched the point with a come-from-behind 8-6 win over Dennis Polyakov and Oscar Podlewski in the No. 3 position.
Rice responded in singles action by winning the first three matches off the court to take a commanding 3-1 lead.
No. 47 Bruno Rosa defeated No. 55 Marcelo Arevalo, 6-4, 6-1, in the No. 1 position, handing Arevalo his third-straight loss after starting the season with a 7-0 record.
Sam Garforth-Bles battled from behind to beat Grant Ive in three sets, 2-6, 6-1, 6-4, in No. 4 singles, followed by Jonathan Chang defeating Tristan Jackson, 7-5, 6-4, in the No. 6 position.
Philip Stephens finally put Tulsa on the board with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 win over Michael Nuesslein in No. 2 singles, cutting the lead to 3-2. However, Oscar Podlewski scored a 6-7, 6-3, 7-5 win over Alastair Barnes in No. 3 singles to clinch the win.
Tulsa wraps up the regular season against in-state rival No. 46 Oklahoma State at 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 14th at the Case Tennis Center.
