TULSA, Okla. - The Golden Hurricane earned its fifth straight sweep with a, 25-19, 25-14, 25-14, win over Lamar Friday evening in front of 549 raucous fans.
Tyler Henderson led the way with 18 kills and bounced back with a .483 hitting percentage, adding 11 digs for her first double-double of the season. For the second time Friday, Hannah Stout hit .500, with seven kills against Lamar. Jordan Clampitt added 33 assists and Jessica Adams had five service aces to go with five digs. Elizabeth Kale tallied five blocks and four kills and Kellie Culbertson had five digs and five kills.
Tulsa hit .239 (37-15-92) with 37 kills, 34 assists, seven service aces, 38 digs and a season-high 9.0 blocks, while Lamar hit .082 (30-22-97) with 30 kills, 26 assists, 30 digs and 9.0 blocks.
Tulsa opened the match with two kills by Henderson, and jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the first set. Lamar fought back and took a 9-6 lead, which it held until the score stood, 14-13, Lady Cardinals. With three straight points, Tulsa took back the lead at 16-14, and roared to a 25-19 win with 11 of the next 16 points in the set.
The Golden Hurricane and Cardinals traded sets of two points at the beginning of set two before TU took the lead for good. In fact, after it broke the 4-4 tie in set two (and scored the first point of set three), Tulsa never trailed the remainder of the match. After breaking the 4-4 tie, the Hurricane moved to a 10-6 lead. With a 12-9 advantage, TU scored in bursts of three (15-9) and five (20-10), with a separate spurt of two points (22-11), before scoring three of the final six points to win, 25-14.
In dominant fashion, Tulsa opened the third set, 6-0, and then held a 10-2 lead by the time Lamar had called both of its allotted timeouts for the set. With a steady mix of kills, service aces and blocks, along with errors by the opponent, the Hurricane was able to win the set, 25-14.
The Golden Hurricane returns to action next weekend when it travels to Fargo, N.D., for the North Dakota State Tournament. TU plays Friday at 1 p.m. against South Dakota and at 7 p.m. against North Dakota State, and Saturday at 2 p.m. against South Dakota State.
