Tulsa, Oklahoma -

Eight University of Tulsa rowers were named CRCA Scholar Athletes for the 2011 season, as announced today by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA). TU had five juniors and three sophomores that qualified for the honor.

To qualify for the honor, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore in athletic standing, rowed in the institution's NCAA or IRA eligible boat(s) for a minimum of 75-percent of the current spring races or racing in a regional conference event, and the student-athlete must have a 3.5 cumulative GPA or higher.

"I am ecstatic that we had eight student-athletes recognized for their academic achievements by the CRCA," Head Coach Kevin Harris said. "They represent the best traditions of Tulsa Athletics and our University, and it is a testament to their work ethic in the classroom."

Juniors that were honored included Rachel Buchanan (Elementary Education, 3.612), Abigail Gorman (Speech Pathology, 3.500), Kelsey Kean (Biochemistry/Mathematics, 3.537), Arielle Tillou (Elementary Education, 3.517) and Emily Wynn (English/Education, 3.629), while the sophomores included Erin Leddy (Marketing, 3.618), Megan Melott (Biochemistry, 3.632) and Amanda Schenk (Arts & Sciences, 3.531).

Buchanan and Wynn are two-time honorees as both rowers picked up the same honor a year ago.
