Corey Albertson and Blaine Gonsalves each netted a goal to give Tulsa's 28th-ranked men's soccer team a 2-1 win over Oakland on Sunday afternoon in the Holiday Inn Tulsa City Center Hurricane Classic. TU moved to 3-2 on the season, while the Grizzlies fell to 0-4-1 overall.
"I thought Oakland came out and played pretty well in terms of defending what we wanted to do," Head Coach Tom McIntosh said. "I think we started the game at an up-beat tempo, but once we gave up the goal we dropped our tempo a little bit. We played a lot of guys, which made us a little disjointed throughout the game, but it gave us a lot of energy. We didn't concede too many opportunities and shots. It wasn't a work of art, but sometimes you just have to get the result and grind it out."
OU got on the board first as Josh Bennett punched in a goal from five yards out off a cross from Joey Tinnion at the 12:06 mark. Just 43-seconds later, Albertson tied the game with a goal from 15 yards out off a pass from Matt Boullt. The remainder of the half ticked off without a score.
Gonsalves came out fired up in the second half and drilled in the game-winning goal at the 45:44 mark. Omar Mata earned the assist.
The Golden Hurricane had a 14-6 lead in shots, including a 6-3 advantage in shots on goal, and had a narrow 8-7 lead in corner kicks.
Kyle Cumings and Albertson each had four shots in the game, while Tony Rocha had two attempts. Michael Murray logged all 90 minutes in goal and picked up two saves.
Tulsa will return to action on Friday, Sept. 16th against Washington in the SMU Classic in Dallas, Texas.
