Erofeeva, Vickers Post Strong Showings In Midland

MIDLAND, Texas - The University of Tulsa women's tennis teams had positive showings at the Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational in Midland Sept. 16-18.
Senior Anastasia Erofeeva, ranked No. 122 in the nation and seeded No. 4 in the tournament, had a run to the quarterfinals where she fell 6-2, 7-5 to Alejandra Granillo of Pepperdine.
Erofeeva defeated TCU's Federica Denti 6-2, 6-7, 7-6 in the second round, and she also defeated Susanna Kuuttila of New Mexico 6-3, 6-2 in the Round of 16.
Sophomore Sam Vickers, ranked No. 89 in the nation and the tournament's No. 2 seed, was upset in the second round by Natalia Mayuk of UT-Arlington by a score of 1-6, 7-6, 7-6.
Senior Ewa Szatkowska was defeated in the second round 6-0, 6-0 by Lorraine Guillermo of Pepperdine. Junior Michelle Farley lost in the first round 4-6, 7-6, 7-6 to Katie Gater of Rice.
After her early exit in the main draw, Vickers tore through the consolation draw and advanced to the championship match despite playing through an injury.
She began with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Kristin Eggleston of New Mexico, and she reached the semifinals with a 6-1, 6-4 triumph over Julia Mongin of Abilene Christian.
Texas Tech's Samantha Adams ended Farley's run in the consolation draw with a 6-0, 2-6, 7-6 decision in the quarterfinals, but Vickers defeated Adams 6-1, 6-3 in the semis.
Vickers defaulted against Millie Nichols of TCU in the championship match because she could not play through the injury that she suffered three rounds prior.
Nichols began the consolation draw with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Szatkowska.
Farley defeated Tara Panu of Pepperdine 6-2, 6-2 in the opening round of the consolation draw.
Farley and Vickers teamed up in the main doubles draw, and they defeated Caroline Stark and Nikki Sanders of Texas Tech 8-5 in the opening round.
The duo was defeated 8-4 by Sheri Olivier and Dane Vorster of Texas A&M in the Round of 16.
Erofeeva and Szatkowska also lost 8-4 in the Round of 16, as they fell to Maria Martinez-Romero and Nikola Matovicova of UT-Arlington.
