TULSA, Okla. - The No. 23-ranked University of Tulsa men's tennis team defeated No. 24 Texas Tech 5-2 Friday night inside Case Tennis Center.
The Golden Hurricane (2-4) won the doubles point and took four of the six singles matches against the Red Raiders (3-2).
Tulsa started strong by taking doubles matches at both the top and bottom courts.
The freshman duo of Lucian Gheorghe and Alejandro Sanchez kicked TU off by defeating Raphael Pfister and Francisco Zambon 8-3 at No. 3 doubles.
The junior duo of Grant Ive and Tristan Jackson, ranked No. 37 in the nation, fell 8-6 to Gonzalo Escobar and Vitor Manzini 8-6, but the home side secured the first point of the match after senior Ashley Watling and junior Clifford Marsland, the No. 3 team in the nation, defeated Raony Carvalho and Rafael Garcia 8-4 from the top of the lineup.
Tulsa took a quick 3-0 advantage after Gheorghe won 6-3, 6-2 over Zambon at the fourth singles flight and Marsland dropped Carvalho 6-3, 6-4 from the first position.
No. 83-ranked Watling posted one of the biggest wins of his career over No. 23 Escobar at the second position. Not only did the senior defeat the Red Raider 2-6, 6-1, 6-3, but also his win secured the team victory for the Golden Hurricane.
Ive fell to Garcia 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-7) from the third position, and Jackson lost to Manzini 7-5, 4-6, 1-0 (11-9) from the fifth flight, but Sanchez dropped Pfister 6-3, 6-7 (3-7), 1-0 (10-7) at six singles to give TU the 5-2 victory.
The Golden Hurricane will return to action at noon Feb. 5 against No. 25 San Diego.
