MEMPHIS, Tenn. -The No. 26-ranked University of Tulsa women's tennis team has earned the top seed in the 2012 Conference USA Women's Tennis Championship, which will be held April 19-22 at the Dunavant-Wellford Tennis Center in Memphis, Tenn.
This marks the fourth time in the last six years that Tulsa has earned the No. 1 seed in the tournament, and the Golden Hurricane has captured four of the last five league titles (2007-08, 2010-11). Both the TU men and women have been tabbed the No. 1 seeds in their respective tournaments this season, and that is the fourth time in the last six years that has occurred (2007-08, 2011-12).
Seeding is based on rankings in the ITA/Campbell Division I Women's Tennis Polls that were released Monday.
Tulsa will be waiting in the quarterfinals for the winner of the match between No. 8-seed East Carolina and No. 9 UAB. TU will begin its quest to defend its title at 10 a.m. April 20.
Joining Tulsa with a first-round bye will be No. 2 Rice, No. 3 Tulane and No. 4 Memphis.
A win in the quarters will give Tulsa a semifinal matchup between either No. 4 Memphis No. 5 Marshall or No. 12 UTEP at noon April 21.
The championship match is set for 10 a.m. April 22.
Tulsa owns an all-time record of 15-2 (.882) in the conference championship, and the team will be rolling into the league tourney on a nine-match win streak.
Tulsa has won the last two Conference USA Championships, taking down SMU (2011) and Marshall (2010) in the finals of the tournament. The Golden Hurricane is also on a 16-match win streak against Conference USA schools dating back to the 2010 season.
