Volleyball Sweeps Miami at the Nike Invitational

NORMAN, Okla. - Junior outside hitter Valerie El Houssine tallied a double-double with 14 kills and 18 digs to lead The University of Tulsa volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep of Miami (25-23, 26-24, 25-21) in the Nike Invitational Saturday morning at McCasland Field House.
Senior outside hitter Kellie Culbertson led TU (10-4) with 15 kills and Erica Bohannon added 11 kills and had a .292 hitting percentage.
Junior setter Bailey Clampitt added 27 assists, while freshman setter Genesis Viera added 21 assists. Freshman libero Brooke Berryhill recorded a match-high 25 digs. Junior middle blocker Carly Boatwright added seven kills and hit .385, and senior middle blocker Miriele Gobbo added four kills and a .500 attack percentage.
Berryhill has recorded 78 digs in her last three matches and has recorded at least 25 digs in each of those three matches.
With the scored tied at 17 in the first set, TU scored five of the next six points to capture a four-point lead, 22-18. The Hurricanes (7-3) pulled the scored to 24-23, but a kill by Bohannon gave TU the opening set and a 1-0 lead in the match.
The second stanza was very close as neither team had a lead of more than two points. With the score tied at 24, TU scored the final two points on kills by Culbertson and Ashley Hooper to win the set and to take a 2-0 lead.
The Golden Hurricane scored the first five points of the third set. The close the gap to 16-15, but TU scored four of the next five points to take a four-point lead, 20-16. With a 22-20 lead and Miami serving, Tulsa got a kill from Bohannon to take a three-point advantage. TU sandwiched kills from Boatwright and Bohannon around a Miami block to close out the match.
The Golden Hurricane concludes the tournament at 4:30 p.m. against Nebraska Omaha.
