Hurricane Volleyball Clips Owls in Five-Set Thriller

TULSA, Okla. - The University of Tulsa volleyball team (20-8, 12-5 The American) topped the league's second-place team, the Temple Owls (22-7, 13-4), 25-18, 29-27, 16-25, 15-25, 15-10, Friday night at the Donald W. Reynolds Center, as the Hurricane wins its seventh match in a row and earned its 10th-straight 20 win season.
Erica Bohannon (18 kills, 12 digs), Bailey Clampitt (49 assists, 13 digs) and Bailey Clampitt (15 kills, 26 digs) all recorded double-doubles in the Tulsa victory. El Houssine's 26 digs matches her career-high she set against Oral Roberts last season.
Paige Panfil recorded a career-high 12 kills, while Brooke Berryhill notched 21 digs for her 11th 20-plus dig performance of the year.
Early in the first set, the Owls jumped out to a 5-1 lead, scoring the first four points, as the visitors looked to be in control at the start.
The Hurricane battled back to take its first lead of the match, 8-7, leading to a Temple timeout.
Tulsa held on to its momentum and the lead, 20-17, forcing another timeout for the Owls. After the timeout, the Golden Hurricane allowed just one more point to the visiting team, as Tulsa ran away with the opening frame at the end. Bohannon finished with a set-high eight kills.
The second frame was evenly played throughout, as the teams were tied on 10 occasions in the set. The Hurricane early 3-1 lead was quickly erased, before the Owls fought back to take a 14-11 lead, forcing a Tulsa timeout.
Later in the frame, Temple was two points away from taking the set, leading 23-20, however, the Hurricane used its magic to even the match at 24-24. Tulsa saw themselves with match points at 25-24 and 27-26, before taking two straight points and a 2-0 lead at halftime, with the momentum favoring them. El Houssine and Bohannon combined for 11 kills in the set.
Halftime was a turning point for the Owls, who held Tulsa to a .021 hitting percentage, while hitting .180 in the third and fourth sets of the match.
The crowd came to life in the final frame to help lift the Golden Hurricane to a convincing win. Temple seemed rattled offensively, hitting -.115.
The win puts Tulsa tied for third place in the conference with SMU, and just one game out of second behind Temple, with three matches remaining.
The Hurricane will return home on Sunday as they take on the Connecticut Huskies at 12:00 p.m., where the team will recognize its three seniors, Clampitt, El Houssine, and Carly Boatwrightt, prior to the match.
