Women's Tennis Completes Day One of OU Classic

Norman, Okla. - Rongrong Leenabanchong, Marcelina Cichon, and Saana Saarteinen each advanced to the semifinals of their respective brackets to lead the University of Tulsa women's tennis team through day one of the OU Classic.

In the Boomer Draw of the Classic, Leenabanchong took her opening round match over North Texas' Anastasiya Shestakova, 6-2, 6-2, before topping Arkansas' Yang Pang, 6-4, 6-0. Leenabanchong will now be matched up in the semifinals with Oklahoma's Lily Miyazaki, who has won in straight sets in her first two rounds of play.

In the Sooner Draw, Cichon saw a lot of the same success as Leenabanchong. Cichon took her opening match against Kansas State's Palma Juhasz, 6-2, 6-4, before winning in straight sets against Albilene Christian's Kaysie Hermsdorf, 6-3, 6-2. Cichon will now take on OU's Abby Melrose in the semifinals of the Sooner bracket.

Saarteinen has cruised through her first two matches in the Stoops Draw. In her first match, Saarteinen overpowered Denver's Julia O' Loughlin, 6-2, 6-1, before easily beating OU's Zita Engbroks, 6-3,6-2. Saarteinen will now take on North Texas' Agustina Valenzuela the semis.

Renata Kuricova fell in the first round of the Sooner draw, 6-7, 2-6, on Saturday morning, sending her to the consolation draw. In her first match in the consolation draw, Kuricova fell to Maria Cardona, 6-4, 6-1, which sets the Hurricane up with Gracia Mboko from Denver.

In the Switzer Draw, Alba Escalona Perny dropped a hard-fought battle against Denver's Megan Barnhill, 6-4, 6-4. With the loss, Perny will take on Kansas State's Riley Nizzi, who fell in her opening match, 6-2, 6-3.

Day two will pick up tomorrow morning with the beginning of doubles action and the continuation of singles play.
