TULSA OPENS VOLLEYBALL SEASON AGAINST THREE-TIME NATIONAL CHAMPION NEBRASKA

7/1/2015 8:28:00 AM | Volleyball

The University of Tulsa women's volleyball team will face three teams in the 2015 campaign that made NCAA Tournament competition last season, it was announced today by Tulsa Head Coach Ryan Wills. Nebraska, Alabama and two matches against the American Athletic Conference defending champion UCF Knights highlights the Golden Hurricane schedule in 2014.

Tulsa, which finished 2014 with an overall 22-9 record and 14-6 league record for fourth place, opens the 2015 season against three-time National Champion Nebraska Cornhuskers on Friday, August 28.

The match against the Cornhuskers, national champions in 1995, 2000 and 2006, tips off the Nebraska Invite. Tulsa will face Pittsburgh, 25-6 last year in the ACC, and Grand Canyon, on Saturday, Aug. 29. Nebraska reached the NCAA Quarterfinal Round a year ago and finished the season ranked 8th nationally.

Tulsa begins the month of September at the Crimson-White Tournament, hosted by the University of Alabama. Tulsa will open the event against College of Charleston on Friday, Sept. 4, followed by matches against Alabama, also on Friday, and Southern Miss on Saturday. The Crimson Tide, coached by former TU coach Ed Allen, posted an overall 25-7 record and fourth-place SEC finish last year.

Tulsa opens the home season at the Golden Hurricane Classic on the weekend of Sept. 11-12 with matches against Stephen F. Austin, Arkansas State and Southern Illinois. A road match-up at cross-city rival Oral Roberts on Sept. 18 comes one day before the Hurricane hosts Houston Baptist and North Texas on Saturday, Sept. 19.

The Hurricane will begin the American Athletic Conference season with three straight road matches, coming at Tulane (Sept. 25), Houston (Sept. 27) and SMU (Sept. 20). The Mustangs finished tied for second place in The American a year ago with an overall 26-6 mark, and 15-5 league record. Tulsa opens the home American Athletic Conference schedule on Sunday, Oct. 4 against East Carolina.

In addition to SMU, Tulsa will face 20+ win league schools Temple (24-8, 15-5 AAC), UCF (25-7, 18-2) and Memphis (23-11, 13-7) twice during the 2015 season. The Hurricane posted a 4-4 record against the league top-5 schools last year, splitting each series with UCF, SMU, Temple and Memphis.
