Tulsa Volleyball Opens 2015 Season Friday at No. 5 Nebraska

Tulsa, Okla.- The University of Tulsa volleyball team's first serve of the 2015 season will be on the road this Friday, Aug. 28 at 7 p.m., in a match against three-time national champion and fifth ranked Nebraska as part of the Nebraska Invitational. The next day the Golden Hurricane takes on Pittsburgh at 10 a.m. and Grand Canyon at 5:30 p.m.
This will be the first time Tulsa has competed on the volleyball court against all three schools. Friday's match can be seen on the Big Ten Network+, which is found online and requires a subscription. Live stats for all three matches can be found here.
Head Coach Ryan Wills is going into his second season with Tulsa. Wills and the Hurricane won 14 or their final 16 league matches last year in their inaugural season in the American Athletic Conference. Starting the 2015 season TU will be going for its 11th consecutive 20+ win season, and that streak is the longest in program history. Tulsa has won six of its past seven season openers.
Junior outside hitter, Erica Bohannon, was a unanimous selection on the preseason all-conference team. Bohannon led Tulsa last year with 472 kills, averaging 4.05 kills per set. Tulsa also returns impact players in senior middle blocker Ashley Hooper and junior libero Brooke Berryhill. Last season Hooper tallied 89 blocks, and she has recorded double digit kills 14 times throughout her career. Berryhill returns to the line-up as libero anchoring the back line for the Hurricane after posting 557 digs last season.
Tulsa's first opponent of the season will be the Nebraska Cornhuskers. The Huskers finished fourth in the Big Ten last year behind three top 10 -ranked programs, and ended last season with an overall record of 23-10, and 14-6 in league play.
Junior outside hitters Kadie and Amber Rolfzen return to the Huskers, leading the team with kills, respectively. Kadie led the team in kills last season recording 405 kills, and her sister was third on the team totaling 246 kills. Senior middle blocker Meghan Haggerty returns as the leading blocker from last season recording 140 total blocks.
The Pittsburgh Panthers concluded with a 25-6 overall record, and 13-5 record in league play, and they finished fifth in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Pitt. returns middle blocker Amanda Orchard who totaled 226 kills and was a first team All-ACC selection.
The Hurricane will end the tournament Saturday evening against the Grand Canyon Antelopes. Last season GCU posted a 21-11 record and a 7-9 record in league play. Sophomore outside hitter Natalie Tardy was selected sixth on the preseason All-WAC team. Tardy tabbed 10 or more kills in 11 of 14 conference contests, and had five double-doubles in league play.
