Tulsa Falls To Southern Miss, 3-1, To Conclude Bama Bash

TULSA, Okla. – The University of Tulsa volleyball team had three players with double-digit kills for the second consecutive match, but it wasn't enough as the Golden Hurricane fell to Southern Miss, 3-1 (25-12, 22-25, 20-25, 23-25) to conclude the Bama Bash. Freshman outside hitter Emily Thorson led the team with 14 kills, and both senior middle blocker Ashley Hooper and junior outside hitter Erica Bohannon recorded 12 kills. Hooper and junior outside hitter Rebecca Reeve were named to the All-Tournament team.
Tulsa posted a 2-1 record in the Bama Bash, but falls to an overall record of 3-3 while Southern Miss improves to an overall 8-0 record.
In the initial frame Tulsa took an early 10-5 lead and extended it late to a 19-9 lead. Southern Miss would score three more points before the Hurricane ended the set 25-12. Tulsa had an impressive .406 hitting percentage limiting the Golden Eagles to a .030 hitting percentage.
The Hurricane led for a majority of the second set being up as much as six before Southern Miss made a late push to tie the score at 16-16. Tulsa trailed the remainder of the stanza, but they came within two points putting the score at 24-22 before Southern Miss ended the set 25-22.
In the third stanza there were five lead changes, and 13 ties. Seven times the score was tied in the first ten points, and six times the score was tied in the teens. The last time the score was tied it was at 19-19, and that's when Southern Miss would pull away to end the stanza 25-20. The set was great offensively as Tulsa had .333 hitting percentage and Southern Miss hitting at a .353 percentage.
The final frame there were eight lead changes, and 15 times that the score was tied. The two teams battled through the whole set with tying scores at 10-10, 15-15, and 22-22. Tulsa would go on to score one more point but it wasn't enough as Southern Miss ended the set 25-23 winning the match 3-1.
Tulsa plays host to the Hurricane Classic next weekend, Sept. 11-12, welcoming Stephen F. Austin, Arkansas State, and Southern Illinois. TU opens the Hurricane Classic Friday at 10 a.m. against Stephen F. Austin.
