Tulsa Volleyball Downs Tulane in Four Sets

10/28/2016 9:28:00 PM | Volleyball

TULSA, Okla. –– The University of Tulsa Volleyball team recorded 81 digs in a four-set (18-25, 25-16, 25-13, 25-17)  win over Tulane on Friday at the Reynolds Center. Brooke Berryhill led the Tulsa (14-9, 3-8 AAC) defense with 29 digs on the evening for the 13th time this season as TU held their opponents to just a .097 hitting-percentage.

"Defensively, they [Tulane] hit under .100 and when teams do that against us we have a good shot," said TU Head Coach Ryan Wills. "One of our goals this week was to make sure we improved our defense. We out-dug them by 20, our libero Brooke [Berryhill] did a great job with over seven digs per set on top of passing really well. It always starts with her in the back row. I thought the blockers did a good job channeling the ball to certain areas as well."

The Hurricane defense had 26 of those 81 digs in the first set, but could not put together much offensive effectiveness as they hit just .049 to Tulane's (13-10, 5-6 AAC) .103 in a 25-18 set loss.

Tulsa's attack hit its stride in the second set behind six kills from Erica Bohannon, including back-to-back conversions to put TU ahead 13-8 midway through the set. Rebecca Reeve followed to put the Hurricane up by six before combining with Rachel Moore for a block that gave Tulsa a 15-8 advantage, forcing a Tulane timeout. The Green Wave scored three straight, but could the Hurricane did not allow them to recover as they pulled ahead and took the set 25-16.

"We got a little bit more aggressive and reduced our attacking errors as well and I think it shows in the numbers," said Wills. "It's a fine balance. One point we were getting a little too aggressive, making some bad choices. But once we were a little more consistent, we were more comfortable with our bodies going up there to attack. We were a little up and down offensively, but our idea was to stay aggressive and in the end it worked out for us."

The Hurricane put together a 7-0 run to end the third set, securing a 25-23 victory in the frame. Tulane went ahead by six at the midway point after a 5-1 run before Tulsa pulled within three after three straight scores at 23-20. Reeve and Moore combined for another block to come with two of the lead prior to an eventual Reeve ace that knotted the score at 23-23. Reeve added nine kills on the evening along with 13 digs while Moore recorded six blocks and added seven kills. The Hurricane capped off the impressive comeback with back-to-back kills to grab the win.

After falling behind early in the fourth, Tulsa put together a 5-0 run to take a 6-3 lead and never looked back. Reeve and Moore continued their strong play at the net, combined for back-to-back blocks that pushed the lead to six as TU eventually stretched their advantage to 11 at 20-9. Tulane made late push by scoring five of the six before a back-and-forth produced a 25-17 decision in TU's advantage.

Tulsa's win broke their seven-match losing streak after starting the season at 13-2. The Hurricane will look to keep this streak going on Sunday when they host Houston at the Reynolds Center in a 1 p.m. start.

"I thought it was a whole team effort tonight from the whole staff to everyone on the team," said Wills. "We've been through a lot and we just found a way to grind through this. We showed a lot of grit today and I'm excited things moving forward."
