Hurricane Comeback Falls Short Against Temple in Season Finale

11/25/2016 2:11:00 PM | Volleyball

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The University of Tulsa Volleyball team's comeback came up short on Friday afternoon as they fell in four sets (25-16, 21-25, 25-19, 27-25) to Temple on the road. The Hurricane (19-13, 8-12 The American) fell behind by two sets heading into the break, eventually taking the third set while holding a lead down the stretch in the fourth set before the third-place Owls (22-8, 15-5 The American) used a late push to secure the match.

Tulsa got production across the board from their attackers as Erica Bohannon led the way with 16 kills while Emily Thorson tied her season-high with 12. Rebecca Reeve added nine as Rachel Moore and Trinity Alualu finished with eight apiece for a team that hit .202 on the afternoon, hitting .333 and .389 respectively.

The Hurricane dropped the opening two sets after falling behind at the midway points of both sets. In the first, Tulsa held their only lead in the frame after a pair of kills from Trinity Alualu and Emily Thorson gave TU a 4-3 advantage. Tulsa tied things up three times before Temple used a 4-0 run to go ahead 13-9 in an eventual 25-16 win.

TU gave the Owls a late push in the second set after falling behind 15-9. The Hurricane pulled within three after a Bohannon kill before Temple scored four of the next five to go up 22-16. Tulsa responded with a 5-0 run that began with two kills from Thorson and one from Alualu before a Taylor Horsfall ace and Owl error brought the Hurricane within one at 22-21. Temple would go on to score the final three points of the set.

The Hurricane held multiple early leads on their way to a 25-19 win in a third set that saw eight ties, going up two early for the first time on a Bohannon kill before Temple scored four straight to go ahead 10-8. Tulsa responded with two straight of their own capped off by an Ashton Anderson ace before one from Brooke Berryhill gave the Hurricane a 12-11 lead, their last advantage in the set until a Temple error put TU ahead 18-17. Jaime Rahilly followed with one of her three kills to put the Hurricane ahead two, eventually stretching their lead to five behind Bohannon's 10th kill of the day.

Temple used a late run in the fourth set to secure the match with a 27-25 win, scoring four straight to go ahead by one down the stretch. The Owls took their largest lead of the set at 14-9 before the Hurricane chipped away at the deficit, eventually using a 5-0 run capped off by consecutive kills from Bohannon to take their first lead of the set at 18-16. A string of three straight scores by Tulsa put them ahead by three, reaching set point after a Thorson kill brought it to 24-21. The Owls scored five straight to go ahead by one before a Thorson answer gave Tulsa their final score of the day.

Reeve finished with a team-high 15 digs while Berryhill and Thorson added 13 and 12, respectively, for a Hurricane team that had 66 on the day.
