
Tulsa Men’s Tennis Downs No. 31-Ranked Washington, 4-1, Saturday Afternoon

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The University of Tulsa men's tennis team defeated the No. 31-ranked Washington Huskies in a 4-1 decision Saturday afternoon at the Varsity Tennis Center. The No. 22-ranked Golden Hurricane improved to an overall 7-3 record, while the Huskies fall to 9-3 overall.
Doubles play was a battle between the two teams as Okkie Kellerman and Matthew Kirby (No. 1) defeated Piers Foley and Wendell Watanabe, 6-4, before Washington's Kawika Lam and Enzo Sommer (No. 2) battled back to defeat Carlos Bautista and Juan Matias Gonzalez, 6-3, to tie the doubles score at 1-1. Dylan McCloskey and Dominic Bechard (No. 3) clinched the doubles point when they defeated Jake Douglas and Mitch Stewart, 7-5, to give Tulsa a 1-0 match lead going into singles play.
"We tried a couple of different doubles combinations today, and it ended up working out in our favor," Head Coach Vince Westbrook said. "We are going to keep trying to find the pieces that fit."
Singles play was regulated by Tulsa as Matthew Kirby (No. 6) defeated Piers Foley, 6-1, 6-0, before Dylan McCloskey (No. 3) went on to defeat Enzo Sommer, 6-4, 6-3, to extend the Hurricane match lead to 3-0. Washington's Jake Douglas (No. 2) defeated Carlos Bautista, 6-4, 6-3, prior to Francois Kellerman (No. 5) defeating Sebastian Hawken, 6-2, 7-5, to clinch a Tulsa 4-1 match victory.
"The guys battled hard today," Westbrook said. "We played well in some positions through our singles line up. Where we didn't play well, we fought well. This needs to continue."
