Golden Hurricane Falls to Owls in Four Sets

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Tulsa volleyball (9-12, 3-6 American) was back in action Friday as they traveled for an American Athletic Conference match against Temple (11-6, 7-2 American). Emily Thorson paced the Golden Hurricane with her 10th double-double with 18 kills and 12 digs, but TU was defeated by the Owls, 3-1 (22-25, 14-25, 27-25, 25-16).

With Tulsa up 8-7 in the first, the Golden Hurricane went on a 3-0 run to extend its lead to 11-7. TU went on to win the set, 25-22. Emily Thorson led the Hurricane with eight kills in the first stanza. Lindsey Ledyard and Mariah Pardo each tallied five assists. Taylor Horsfall scooped up six digs, while Thorson added five digs.

Callie Cook led the attack in the second set with three kills. Thorson and Emily Hubbard each added two kills. Pardo assisted on four kills and Ledyard added three assists. Horsfall provided seven digs to lead TU on the defensive side of the net. With Tulsa up 6-4 in the second, Temple scored five unanswered points to take a 9-6 lead. The Owls did not let off as they took the second set, 25-14.

The third set was a tightly contested battle as Tulsa and Temple went back-and-forth. The Owls eventually won the set, 27-25. Padro recorded seven assists and Ledyard added six assists in the third. Thorson notched five kills. Cook chipped in with four kills. Horsfall picked up six digs, while Thorson added five.

Temple took the momentum from the third set and won the fourth set, 25-16. Horsfall totaled 13 digs in the fourth set. Ledyard and Pardo each tallied four assists. Thorson had three kills. Hubbard, Maggie Hembree and Rachel Moore all added two kills.

As a team, Temple had 95 digs, 63 kills, 59 assits, and six total blocks. Mia Heirakuji led the Owls with 25 digs, as five players tallied double-digit digs. Kyra Coundourides had 46 assists. Izzy Rapacz had 18 kills for Temple.

Thorson tallied her 10th double-double on the season with 18 kills and 12 digs. Cook finished with 10 kills. Pardo dished out 20 assists, while Ledyard finished with 18 assists. Horsfall recorded a game high-32 digs. Ashton Anderson tallied 10 digs. As a team, the Golden Hurricane totaled 78 digs, 47 kills, 44 assists, and five team blocks.

With the loss, Tulsa falls to 9-12 overall and 3-6 in conference play. The Golden Hurricane returns to action Sunday, Oct. 22, as it travels to UConn. First serve is scheduled for 11 a.m.
