Tulsa Fell in Five-Set Battle Against Temple

TULSA, Okla. – Tulsa volleyball (14-14, 8-8 American) returned to the court Saturday, as it hosted the Temple Owls (16-8, 12-4 American). Emily Thorson tied a career-high 25 kills and added a career-high 21 digs, for her 13th double-double, in TU's 3-2 loss against Temple.
The Golden Hurricane opened the first set on an 11-6 run. With Tulsa up 13-10, the Owls went on a 5-0 run and took a 15-13 lead. Temple went on to win the first set, 25-19. Emily Hubbard led the defense with eight digs, while Mariah Pardo chipped in with six digs. Rachel Moore led the attack, as she collected a set-high six kills. Pardo assisted on six kills. Moore and Ebony Carter each recorded two block assists.
Callie Cook was a force at the net defensively in the second set as she tallied four total blocks. Taylor Horsfall scooped up a set-high eight digs. Pardo notched nine assists. Moore provided four kills, while Emily Thorson added three. The second set was a tightly contested battle as the score was tied 11 different times and the lead changed hands four times. The Owls took the second set, 25-22.
After the intermission, Temple took a slim 10-8 lead, but the Hurricane stormed back and took a 13-12 lead. The set was tied at 22-22, when Tulsa scored three unanswered points to win the third set, 25-22. Pardo went for a set-high 16 assists in the third stanza. Thorson led the attack with six kills. Moore added five kills, while Cook chipped in with four. Horsfall led the defense with eight digs, as Thorson contributed with seven. Thorson, Cook, Carter, and Pardo all had a block assist.
With the Owls on top 16-11, the Golden Hurricane rallied and went on an 8-3 run to tie the fourth set, 19-19. With Tulsa up 22-21 and after a Temple timeout, Hubbard recorded back-to-back service aces to extend TU's lead to 24-21. The Hurricane won the next point on a Temple attack error to win the fourth set, 25-21. Thorson and Horsfall each tallied six digs to lead Tulsa. The tandem of Thorson and Moore combined for 15 kills. Moore had eight kills while Thorson had seven. Pardo amassed 17 assists in the fourth frame. Cook posted a solo block.
The fifth and final set was a back-and-forth battle. Temple held a 12-10 lead, before scoring the final three points of the match, as it won the fifth set, 15-10. Thorson went for a set-high five kills. Pardo led the team with seven assists. Carter, Horsfall and Thorson all posted two digs each.
For the match, Temple had 95 digs, 65 kills, 63 assists, and 13 total blocks. Dana Westfield led the Owls with 15 kills. Three other Owls added double-digit kills. Kyra Coundourides totaled a team-high 53 assists. Izzy Rapacz had 21 digs. Temple had four other players with double-digit digs.
Thorson tied a career-high with 25 kills and added a career-high 21 digs, for her 13th double-double on the year. Thorson tied a career-high with four blocks. Moore recorded a career-high 24 kills. Adding to the career-highs, Pardo set a new career-high mark in assists, with 55, and tallied 15 digs, for her eighth double-double on the season. Cook tied a career-high seven total blocks. Horsfall accumulated a match-high 26 digs. Hubbard finished with double-digit digs, with 15. As a unit, Tulsa totaled 93 digs, 66 kills, 63 assists, and 11 team blocks.
Tulsa fell to 14-14 overall and 8-8 in American Athletic Conference play. The Golden Hurricane returns to the hardwood Friday, Nov. 17, as it hosts the Shockers of Wichita State. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
