BERKELEY, Calif. — The 40th-ranked Tulsa women's tennis team took the first three points of the day only to see No. 21 LSU storm back to take a 4-3 decision in the first round of the 2017 NCAA Division I Championships on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Hurricane (20-8), who made their 11th consecutive NCAA appearance, saw their season come to an end, while the Tigers (15-10) advance to Sunday's second round.

Tulsa started the match strong by winning the doubles point. The LSU duo of Skylar Holloway and Jessica Golovin won on the No. 3 court, but the Hurricane stormed back to take the point as Rongrong Leenabanchong and Martha Matoula defeated Jade Lewis and Rebecca Weissmann, 6-2, before Ksenia Laskutova and Mahitha Dadireddy downed the No. 16 team of Joana Valle Costa and Ryann Foster, 6-4.

The Hurricane kept rolling into singles play as Vera Ploner defeated Holloway by scores of 6-4, 6-4 before Matoula downed Weissmann 6-2, 6-2 for the 3-0 advantage.

However, the Tigers would not go away as No. 46 Valle Costa took a 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 win over Leenabanchong and Golovin took another tight match against Okalova, 6-3, 7-6 (4). LSU then pulled even when No. 105 Foster took a 6-4, 2-6, 6-1 victory against Dadireddy.

With the match tied, 3-3, the contest came down to the No. 1 singles spot where Laskutova took the first set against No. 11 Lewis, 6-4. But Lewis rallied for a 6-1 win in the second set and she claimed the match for the Tigers with a tight 6-4 triumph in the final set.
