Tulsa Defeats ORU in Day One of ORU Invitational

TULSA, Okla. – Tulsa took to the court for the first time in its home state, as it battled crosstown rival Oral Roberts in the first matchup of the ORU invitational. TU had four players with double-digit kills as the Golden Hurricane won, 3-2.
Emily Thorson put TU up 15-14 in the fifth and final set. With the home crowd going wild to try and get the home team fired up, Rachel Moore laid down a monster kill to close out the match with a 16-14 final-set win.
Callie Cook paced the Golden Hurricane in the first set with five kills. Lindsey Ledyard notched seven assists, while Taylor Horsfall collected six digs. Ebony Carter posted two assisted blocks to lead Tulsa. The Hurricane took the first set, 25-23.
Thorson and Emily Hubbard led Tulsa in the second set with four kills each. Ledyard posted six assists in the set. Horsfall came up big, as she scooped up six digs. As a team, the Golden Hurricane totaled 32 digs and 25 kills through two sets. The Hurricane recorded a .314 hitting percentage in the second set, on their way to a 2-0 set lead.
Thorson led the Golden Hurricane with five kills in the third stanza. Ledyard earned seven assists, while Horsfall tallied seven digs. ORU took the third set, 25-18.
Hubbard led TU with four kills in the fourth set. Mariah Pardo assisted on six kills to lead Tulsa for the set. Horsfall notched four digs. The Golden Eagles took the fourth set, 25-23.
The fifth set was a back-and-forth battle early. ORU took a 12-9 lead, but Tulsa answered with three unanswered points to tie the set at 12-12. After the Golden Eagles tied the match at 14-14, Thorson and Moore blasted kills to help TU take the fifth set 16-14 and the match 3-2.
Thorson led the Hurricane with 18 kills, while Hubbard added 13. Moore and Cook each tallied 12 kills. Ledyard compiled 29 assists and Pardo set a new career-high with 24 assists. Thorson led the defense with 26 kills. Pardo, Ledyard and Hubbard all had 11 digs each. Hubbard picked up her third double-double, Ledyard notched her fifth double-double and Pardo earned her first double-double of the year.
Laura Milos had a match-high 32 kills for the Golden Eagles. CeCe Madison added 15. Bria Bergman led ORU with 34 assists and Madison led the ORU defense with 21 digs.
With the win, the Golden Hurricane improve to 6-4 on the season. Tulsa returns to action tomorrow for day two of the ORU Invitational as it takes on Wyoming and Central Arkansas.
