Tulsa Brings Home Nine Victories on Day One of Hurricane Invite

TULSA, Okla. – The Tulsa women's tennis team collected nine victories in the opening day of the Hurricane Invite at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on Friday. The Golden Hurricane picked up three doubles victories, followed by six singles match wins.

In the flight 1 doubles match, Ksenia Laskutova and Martha Matoula battled Wyoming's Elisa Koonik and Tessa van Der Ploeg. The Tulsa tandem remained on serve with the Wyoming pair until TU managed to break serve and win the match, 6-4.

Martina Okalova and Vera Ploner faced Magdalena Stencel and Milka Genkova of Wyoming in the flight 2 doubles match. The two doubles teams remained on serve until the score was 5-4, in favor of Stencel and Genkova. Okalova and Ploner were able to tie the match at 5-5, while on serve, before breaking the Cowgirls' duo's serve to take a 6-5 lead. The TU pair would get the final game needed while serving, to win the match, 7-5.

Tamara Kupkova and Shura Poppe faced off against Ana Tkachenko and Myiah Scott from Wyoming in the flight 3 doubles match. Kupkova and Poppe jumped out to a commanding 4-0 lead, but the Cowgirls' pair came back and made the match 5-3. Kupkova and Poppe went on to win the match, 6-3.

In the singles flight 1 match, Laskutova went up against Stencel. Laskutova and Stencel remained on serve with the score 3-2. Laskutova took control of the match and captured the next three games to win the first set, 6-2. Laskutova used the momentum from the end of the first set and jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second set. Stencel earned a game before Laskutova won the set 6-1 and the match in two sets.

Matoula squared off with van Der Ploeg in a singles flight 2 matchup. Matoula took the opening set, 6-2, but van Der Ploeg won the second set, 6-3. Matoula pulled away in the third set and won the set, 6-1, to claim the match victory.

Kupkova started her flight 3 singles match against Tkachenko, 3-0 in the first set. Tkachenko collected a game, but Kupkova won the first set, 6-1. Kupkova continued her success in the second set as she won the set, 6-2.

In the flight 4 singles match, Ploner took on Koonik. Koonik rolled in the first set, 6-2, but Ploner stormed back to win the second set, 6-1. Using the momentum from the second, Ploner pulled away in the third set and won 6-2.

Poppe battled Genkova in the flight 5 singles match. Poppe won the first set, 6-3, but Genkova tied the match as she won the second set, 7-5. In the third and final set, Poppe broke Genkova's serve three times to win the set, 6-0.

In the flight 6 singles match, Alexandrina Chinikova faced Scott. Chinikova won the match as she dominated the first set, 6-1, before she swept the second, 6-0.

The Golden Hurricane returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 20, for the second day of the Hurricane Invite. First serves are scheduled for 9 a.m.
