Tulsa Volleyball Falls to UCF in First Road Conference Clash

ORLANDO, Fla. – The University of Tulsa volleyball squad (11-5, 3-1) fell to UCF (13-3, 4-0), 3-1, in the team's first road American Athletic Conference test of the season on Friday.
In set one, the Golden Hurricane found itself in a back-and-forth battle. Despite a 5-0 Tulsa run in the middle of the set to keep it close, the Knights nabbed the first set, 25-20. Maddie Flora and Emily Hubbard accrued service aces in the set, to go along with Emily Thorson's four kills in the frame.
The second frame played out much like the first, as the teams traded kills back-and-forth. Hubbard added her second service ace of the match in a clutch moment, bringing Tulsa down just two, 19-21, late in the frame. The Knights would fend off the late Hurricane rally, taking the set, 25-22.
The Golden Hurricane found its stride in the third set, taking the frame, 25-20. Thorson and Callie Cook knocked down four kills each to pace Tulsa in the set. Cook recorded a lofty .500 hitting percentage in the frame, while the team recorded a solid 71 percent sideout percentage in the stanza.
Tulsa made it interesting late in the fourth set, as Thorson accumulated eight kills in the frame. Despite her efforts, the Knights outlasted Tulsa to clinch the set and match, 25-23.
Thorson would finish the match with a team-high 19 kills, while Taylor Horsfall resumed her defensive ways, adding 27 digs in the contest. Hubbard's two service aces were also a season-high for the sophomore.
As a whole, Tulsa tied a season-high with seven service aces, to go along with 85 digs, with three players recording 10+ digs in the defeat.
Despite the loss, the team still maintains a perfect 7-0 home record in 2018.
Head coach Ryan Wills' bunch remains in Florida for the weekend, as the team is scheduled to square off with USF on Sunday, Oct. 7, at 11 a.m. CT.
