Tulsa Falls in Straight Sets to UConn

STORRS, Conn. – The University of Tulsa volleyball squad (18-10, 10-6) dropped its Friday night match at UConn (14-15, 6-10) in straight sets, 3-0.
The Tulsa defense exceled in the first set, but the Huskies managed to stave off TU in the frame, 25-18. Sophomore Maggie Hembree paced the Hurricane attack, knocking down three kills on four swings, while Maddie Flora picked up seven digs in the frame.
TU managed to find a rhythm in the second set, but fell to UConn in the stanza, 25-21. Senior Emily Thorson and sophomore Callie Cook tallied four kills each, while Cook managed to do so at a .571 clip. Junior DS/L Taylor Horsfall racked up six digs in the frame.
In the third frame, a 6-0 run early in the set put the Golden Hurricane on top early, but the Huskies rallied late to clinch the set and match, 25-23. Horsfall managed seven digs on the back line for TU, while Cook and Elyse Savadove added three kills each to pace the Golden Hurricane.
Tulsa tallied 33 kills, 63 digs and three service aces in the match. Horsfall finished with 19 digs, while Flora wasn't far behind with 16. Thorson and Cook each racked up eight kills in the defeat, while Cook finished the match with an efficient .368 hitting percentage.
As Thorson continues to climb the rankings as one of Tulsa's most feared hitters, she needs just 10 kills to surpass Hannah Stout for No. 5 TU all-time in kills, who finished her career with 1,116.
Despite the defeat, the Golden Hurricane is still on track to finish with the best record in head coach Ryan Wills' five-year tenure.
With Wills' bunch's 2018 home slate finished, it heads to Pennsylvania for a Sunday match with Temple, while a Havoc in the Heartland midweek matchup at Wichita State looms to round out the regular season on Nov. 21.
