TULSA, Okla. — The University of Tulsa volleyball team was selected to compete in the National Invitational Volleyball Championship, set to begin on Nov. 29, with the championship match to be played on Dec. 11, the organization announced on Sunday.
The Golden Hurricane face off with North Texas (17-16, 11-3 C-USA) in Denton, Texas, on Thursday, November 29 at 7 p.m. CT in the first round of the tournament.
"We're happy to we get the opportunity to keep competing in the postseason," head coach Ryan Wills said. "There will be a lot of great programs not playing at this time of year and we are blessed to have this experience."
Tulsa owns a 15-7 record all-time against the Mean Green, with the last matchup between the teams on September 26 this season. In a midweek non-conference matchup, the Golden Hurricane took down North Texas in a five-set thriller, 3-2, inside the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
The women's NIVC is a single-elimination event, with all matches played at sites of host schools. The event debuted in 1989 with 20 teams, in response to demand for another postseason opportunity within the sport. This year's event will feature 32 teams in the single-elimination bracket.
In the regular season, Tulsa finished fourth in the American Athletic Conference, boasting an 19-11 overall record and a 11-7 mark in conference play. The 19-11 regular season record is the second-best mark in Wills' five seasons at the helm of the Golden Hurricane.
"This team has done some good things this year, but I also think everyone on this team knows we haven't played our best volleyball yet," Wills added. "We have another level we can go to and the NIVC gives us the opportunity to reach our potential as a team."
The women's NIVC tournament will mark the first postseason action for Wills' squad in his tenure, along with the first time TU will play past the regular season since the C-USA Championship in 2013.
With a win, Tulsa will face the winner of Wichita State (13-17, 8-10) and Central Arkansas (26-6, 14-2 Southland) on Friday, Nov. 30, at 5:30 p.m. CT in Denton, Texas.
