Ploner and Okalova Earn Spot in Doubles Consolation Semifinals

SURPRISE, Ariz. – The University of Tulsa women's tennis tandem of Vera Ploner and Martina Okalova took down No. 14 Fatima Bizhukova/Marta Bellucco of Wichita State, 6-0, 6-1, en route to advancing to the doubles consolation semifinals at the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships on Friday.
With another victory at the tournament, the Tulsa duo improves to a near-flawless 11-1 in doubles play in the fall of 2018, including its first win this season against a nationally-ranked opponent.
Okalova and Ploner built momentum from the first serve, using an 87 percent first serve percentage to take the first set with ease, 6-0. Tulsa won eight of 11 first return points to secure the frame.
The Tulsa tandem refused to allow the Wichita State duo to find a rhythm, as the Golden Hurricane clinched the second frame and match, 6-1.
Okalova and Ploner will look to continue their run in the doubles consolation bracket, facing the winner of Davies/Rohrabacher (South Carolina) and Knutson/Ramirez (Syracuse) tomorrow with time TBA.
