PITTSBURG
, Kan. – The University of Tulsa track and field team opened the indoor season at the Crimson and Gold Invitational on Saturday, picking up a first-place finish from redshirt-junior Aleks Rapp in the men's weight throw in the meet.

The Golden Hurricane got its first gold of the meet in the first field event of the day, the men's weight throw. Rapp, who already holds the meet record in the event from 2016, launched a 19.29m/63-3.50 toss in his second attempt, giving him his first event title of the season.

In the women's long jump, redshirt-sophomore Carsyn Spurgeon leapt 5.69m/18-8 on her final attempt, which earned her second overall in her second event of the afternoon.

On the track, Tulsa picked up two second-place finishes on the day, in the form of the men's 600-yard run and the women's 5,000 meters.

In the men's 600 yards, Bailey Bournival hit his stride to the tune of a 1:13.49. Redshirt-sophomore Caitlin Klopfer also picked up silver in her race, going 17:27.15 to edge out teammate Caroline Miller, who took third in 17:36.75.

Bailey Stewart made his presence felt in a heated men's 800 meters, notching a third-place finish with a solid 1:54.37.

The men's 3,000 meters proved to be one of the most successful events of the meet for the Golden Hurricane, who put four inside the top-10 finishers. Reed Sahadevan led the way for TU, taking third overall in 8:53.08, while Archer Bennett, Bryan Corbaz and Brett Davis joined him inside the top-10.

Freshman Jaidyn McCallon made a splash in her TU debut, tallying fourth overall in a respectable 56.93.

In the final event of the competition, the men's 4x400-meter relay team of Stewart, Grey Howard, Bournival and Zachary Adee notched a third-place finish, running a 3:18.59 to close out the meet.

Head coach Steve Gulley's squad will get time to train, and will resume action on Jan. 11 at the Arkansas Invitational in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
