Tulsa Drops Heartbreaking 4-3 Decision to Wichita State

TULSA, Okla. – Majed Kilani and Lucca Baptista each tallied singles and doubles match victories on Monday night at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. It all came down to the final set of the No. 3 singles match, where Wichita State (3-5) pulled out a narrow victory against Tulsa (6-8), 4-3.
Kilani and Baptista paired up in the No. 2 doubles match, where they faced Andrea Caligiana and Miroslav Herzan. Baptista and Kilani managed to break the serves of Caligiana and Herzan twice, on their way to a 6-2 victory.
Murkel Dellien and Marius Frosa defeated Joshua Goodger and Jarod Hing, 6-3, at the No. 1 doubles position. Eddie Stoica and Haru Inoue beat Louis Corker and Mitchell Pritchard in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (8-6). The Shockers held a 1-0 lead after doubles action.
The No. 108 ranked singles player, Kilani, squared off with Frosa in the No. 1 singles match. Kilani ran away with the first stanza, 6-1, before he duplicated the score in the second set. Kilani improved to 8-3 in dual singles matches. Kilani's win tied the overall match between Tulsa and Wichita State 1-1.
In the No. 6 singles match, Caligiana defeated Corker in two sets, 7-5 and 6-4, putting the Shockers back on top, 2-1. At the No. 5 singles position, Stoica bested Pritchard 6-3 and 6-4, which extended the Wichita State lead to 3-1.
Goodger, the No. 66 ranked player, went up against Inoue in the No. 2 singles spot. Goodger broke Inoue's serve once on the way to a 6-3 opening set victory. Inoue broke Goodger once in the second set, as he won 6-3, which forced a third and deciding set. The two managed to break each other's serve twice, which forced a tiebreaker. Goodger pulled away and claimed the tiebreaker, 7-2, which gave him the match victory. Goodger is now 8-3 on the season in dual match singles action. Tulsa trailed Wichita State 3-2.
Baptista and Herzan battled each other in the No. 4 singles match. Baptista won the opening frame, 7-5, but Herzan won the second, 7-5, which forced a third set. Baptista was resilient in the third, as he broke Herzan's serve to take a 6-5 lead. Baptista capitalized on his next serve and claimed the third set victory, 7-5. Baptista improved to 9-4 in dual match singles play and he tied the overall match at 3-3.
Dellien won the opening set of the No. 3 singles match against Hing, 6-4. Hing battled back in the second and forced a tiebreaker. Hing was able to win the tiebreaker, 8-6, which gave him a 7-6 second set win and forced a third and final set. Dellien took the final set, 6-3, and clinched the match for Wichita State, 4-3.
The Golden Hurricane falls to 6-8 on the season. Tulsa returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 28, as it travels to Fort Worth, Texas, for a match against No. 18 TCU. First serves are scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
