#32-Ranked Tulsa Women’s Tennis Shuts Out #27- Wichita State 7-0

TULSA, Okla. –– The 32nd-ranked Tulsa women's tennis team claimed a 7-0 victory over the 27th-ranked Wichita State Shockers Saturday afternoon at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in the tennis version of Havoc in the Heartland rivalry series.
The Golden Hurricane improved to 14-3 on the season, while the Shockers fell to 13-5. Tulsa has now won nine of its last 10 matches.
Tulsa won the doubles point quickly against Wichita State with two 6-0 victories, and then won the match with the first three single decisions, all three in straight sets.
Martha Matoula put the Hurricane ahead 2-0 when she claimed a 6-1, 6-2 victory at the No. 4 position over Wichita State's Marta Bellucco, and improving her dual record to 9-2 and overall match record to 15-5.
After cruising to a 6-1 win in the first set, Tulsa's Vera Ploner found herself trailing 5-2 in the second, but won the next five games for a 7-5 victory over the Shockers' Gabriela Porubin to put the Hurricane ahead 3-0. Ploner is now 14-8 overall on the year and has a 9-4 record in dual matches.
Tulsa's 71st-ranked Ksenia Laskutova clinched the Tulsa victory with a straight set win over the nation's No. 84-ranked Fatima Bizhukova. Laskutova took a 6-4 victory in the first set, and then finished off the match with a 6-2 win. The victory improved Laskutova's overall record to 19-6 and her dual record to 13-3.
Tamara Kupkova put the Hurricane ahead 5-0 when she claimed a three-set win over Giulia Guidetti at the No. 3 position. Kupkova improved to 13-7 overall on the season with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 victory.
At the No. 2 spot, Martina Okalova put the Hurricane ahead 6-0, but it wasn't without a fight. Okalova trailed in the first set 5-2 and battled back for a 7-5 victory. In the second set, she again trailed 3-1 before having to win the final two games for the 7-6 (7) win. Okalova took a 6-1 lead in the tiebreak, before WSU's Sandra Honigova closed it to 6-5.
Okalova moved to 18-5 on the season and 11-2 in dual match play.
The final match of the day between Tulsa's Shura Poppe and the Shockers' Sarvinoz Saidhujaeva at the No. 6 position came down to three sets. Poppe took the first set 6-4, before dropping the second set 6-1. In the final set, Poppe trailed 5-4 before winning the final three games to give the Hurricane a 2-0 win over Wichita State.
In doubles action, it took Tulsa less than 25 minutes to capture a 1-0 lead as the team at No. 2 of Okalova and Ploner and the No. 3 team of Kupkova and Rouxanne Janse van Rensburg defeated their opponents with 6-0 shutouts.
Tulsa will be on the road next Friday and Saturday, March 23-24, in New Orleans, Louisiana, as the Hurricane will face-off against two American Athletic Conference foes with a Friday matchup against SMU and a Saturday match against host Tulane.
