DENTON, Texas – Shelby Estocado slugged a pair of two-run homers and Tulsa took two more wins on the second day of the North Texas Invitational with an 11-3 victory over UT Arlington followed by a 9-6, eight-inning triumph against Nicholls State.
Estocado went 5-for-9 (.556) on the day, while Morgan Neal also drove in four runs for the Golden Hurricane (11-7), who have won eight of its last nine games. Julia Hollingsworth hit a pair of triples and drove in three runs, while Emily Watson and Haley Meinen picked up wins in the circle.
In the opener, the Mavs (8-7) jumped ahead 2-0 with a run in each of the first two innings before the Tulsa offense got rolling. TU quickly erased the deficit with a three-run bottom of the second and never looked back on its way to the 11-3 run-rule win.
Shannon Hughes got the scoring started with an RBI single that brought home Sarah Kosmata, who opened the inning with a double. Morgan Neal then put two more on the scoreboard for the Hurricane with a two-out, two-RBI single up the middle for the 3-2 lead.
Hughes singled home another run in the third and Tulsa used a pair of homers in the fourth to break the game open. Estocado hit the first of her two two-run homers and Meinen blasted her first round-tripper of the fall to make it 7-2.
UT Arlington got one run back in the top of the fifth to pull within 7-3, only to watch Tulsa put four on the board in the bottom of the panel to end the game.
Another Estocado two-run shot brought home Julia Hollingsworth and Rylie Spell's two-run single down the left-field line plated Samantha Pochop and Tori Stafford for the 11-3 victory.
Watson notched her sixth consecutive win in the circle and she improved to 7-2 on the season after she allowed two earned runs over five frames.
TU raced out to a 4-0 lead on the Colonels (9-7), thanks in part to a pair of triples from Hollingsworth. The junior led off the game with a triple to center field and came around on Neal's sacrifice fly. The Hurricane then plated three runs in the top of the second, two of which came around to score on another Hollingsworth three-bagger. Neal ripped a double down the right-field line to again bring Hollingsworth home.
However, Nicholls State scored three in the bottom of the second and tied the score with another run in the fourth.
Tulsa again took the lead in the fifth as Kosmata plated Estocado with a grounder and Stafford made it 6-4 when she scored on a wild pitch.
The Colonels came back with a run in the bottom of the panel and tied it up in the sixth. Neither team could score in the seventh to send the game to extra innings.
In the eighth, TU scored three runs on three hits to take the lead for good. Playing with the international tie-breaker rule, Mikayla Whitten sent a one-out RBI single back up the middle for a 7-6 advantage. Meinen and Hollingsworth then each singled to bring runs to the plate and make it 9-6.
Meinen, who entered the circle in the bottom of the second, retired the Colonels in order in the bottom of the eighth to seal the victory. The junior allowed three runs over seven innings of relief with four strikeouts to pick up her first win of the campaign.
Tulsa will close play at the North Texas Invitational at 9 a.m. on Sunday, March 4, against UT Arlington.
