WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Tulsa women's tennis team's historic season came to an end on Thursday, in the NCAA Sweet 16. The Golden Hurricane fell to Florida State, 4-3, at the North Carolina Tennis Complex.
"You have to give Florida State a lot of credit for fighting back the way they did after losing the doubles point and being down 3-2. They never went away and it was a great win on their part. We thought we had a team that could go deep here, but we came up a little short. When we do have time to reflect on the season, it was a solid season to be conference champions and make the Sweet 16," said Head Coach Dean Orford.
Martina Okalova and Vera Ploner defeated Julia Mikulski and Andrea Garcia, 6-1, in the No. 2 doubles match.
Gabriella Castaneda and Petra Hule of FSU knocked off the Tulsa duo of Rouxanne Janse van Rensburg and Tamara Kupkova, 6-4, in the No. 3 position.
Martha Matoula and Ksenia Laskutova defeated the No. 56 ranked doubles team of Carla Touly and Ariana Rahmanparast in the No. 1 doubles match. Laskutova and Matoula battled back after being down 4-1, to win the match, 7-5. Tulsa clinched the doubles points and led 1-0 as the match went to singles play.
The Seminoles tied the match at 1-1, when the No. 122 ranked Hule defeated the No. 112 ranked Okalova, 6-3 and 6-2, in the No. 2 singles match.
At the No. 1 spot, No. 19 Touly beat Laskutova, 6-1 and 6-2, as she gave the Seminoles a 2-1 lead.
Kupkova stormed away with the first set, 6-2, against Nandini Das in the No. 3 match. Kupkova used the momentum from the first set and controlled the second set, 6-4. Kupkova tied the match at 2-2. She improved to 12-8 in dual matches.
Shura Poppe battled Garcia to a 6-4 victory in the opening set of the No. 6 spot. Poppe breezed to a 6-2 second-set victory. Poppe's victory put the Hurricane back on top, 3-2, and she improved to 11-1 in dual match singles play.
FSU's Castaneda needed three sets to defeat Matoula in the No. 4 matchup, 6-4, 0-6, and 6-4. The match was tied, 3-3.
Rahmanparast clinched the match for Florida State, when she claimed a three-set victory, 6-1, 4-6, and 6-3, in the No. 5 position against Ploner.
The Golden Hurricane's historic season came to a heartbreaking end. Tulsa concluded the season with a 23-6 record and advanced to the Sweet 16 for the first time in school history.
