Tulsa’s Lightweight 2x Earns Silver Medal at Alternate to IRA National Championship

Sophia Camara and Lucy Coleman earned a silver medal in the Lightweight 2x at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association Lightweight National Championship on Sunday afternoon. The event, which was schedule to be raced at Mercer Lake in Princeton, N.J., was moved to Lake Carnegie, which is Princeton's home course and 20 minutes from the original scheduled site.

The race was not official as the IRA had canceled the race due to poor weather conditions, but the coaches voted to move the Grand Final to Lake Carnegie.

The Golden Hurricane duo turned in a time of 7:52.47, just 0.33 seconds behind Princeton's gold medal finish (7:52.14). TU topped Wisconsin (8:07.57), Stanford (8:11.88) and Georgetown (8:45.24) in the Grand Final.

"It was a good day," Head Coach Kevin Harris said. "We had two student-athletes work really hard to represent The University of Tulsa. They handled the changes amazing well and did a great job on the course, having never rowed on Lake Carnegie before. They were ahead in the first part of the race, but they were hit by some wind and it was a dog fight the rest of the way down, and Princeton was able to get ahead of us. Sophia and Lucy put everything they had into the race. It was a gutsy performance and I am proud of how well they represented TU. It epitomized the whole season in how well the whole team has rowed all season and it was indicative of the direction of this team."

"It looked like we weren't going to race when the IRA canceled the race at Lake Mercer, but the Lightweight coaches got together and decided to move the Grand Final to Princeton," Harris said. "We all have traveled so far so we were happy for the opportunity to race."
