Tulsa Volleyball Earns Second-Straight AVCA Team Academic Honor

TULSA, Okla. –– The University of Tulsa volleyball team was recognized with the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award for the 2017-18 season, the organization announced.
After earning the prestigious honor a season ago, the Golden Hurricane volleyball squad boasted a team grade-point average of 3.56 for the term. Tulsa finished the 2017-18 campaign ahead of preseason projections at 15-17.
TU is one of 163 NCAA Division I volleyball programs to receive the award, which is up from last year's total of 145. A cumulative 973 collegiate and high school volleyball teams were honored, setting an all-time high for the award.
The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team GPA on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.
The AVCA Team Academic Award is the single largest award offered by quantity of schools, players and coaches honored. Since the 2000-2001 season, the number of recipients has increased every single year but two, while amassing a 619-team increase over the span of the last decade. Since the award's inception in 1993, the amount of award winners has increased from 62 to its current number of 973.
The Golden Hurricane opens the 2018-19 season on the road at the Purdue Mortar Board Premier in West Lafayette, Indiana, against Bowling Green on August 24 at 11 a.m. The team's first home match is September 7, at 6:30 p.m. as the Golden Hurricane plays host to Abilene Christian in the Tulsa Volleyball Invitational at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
