The Tulsa men's soccer team started the season with a 2-1 win over #15 Michigan on Friday night at the U-M Soccer Stadium in Ann Arbor, Mich. TU moved to 1-0 on the season while UM fell to 0-1 overall.

"It was a good start to the season," Head Coach Tom McIntosh said.  "We were able to get that early goal as Gilles played a great ball through to Seba (Juan Sanchez), but I didn't think we were very composed and didn't combine like we are capable of doing, which was due to Michigan's pressure, and they were able to get a goal back.  Then to get the late goal off the corner was great movement by Gustavo to get the header and Joe to finish it off."

"In the second half we were able to dictate the tempo with our passing, but Michigan continued to press for the tying goal.  I thought we could have been more composed in the final 15 minutes, but I am happy with the progress we made in the second half.  We also have to credit Cooper Clark because he made some big saves.  He is very confident and controlled his box, and we had to rely on him so he was huge tonight."

Juan Sanchez opened up the scoring in the 11th minute as he picked up a pass from Gilles Kuhler at the 18-yard box to put the Golden Hurricane up 1-0.  Zakyi Mohammed evened the score for the Wolverines at the 23:53 mark.

With just under 90 seconds remaining in the first half, Joe Ruiz scored on a corner kick taken by Chase Bromstedt that was headed by Gustavo Vargas and then punched in by Ruiz to give TU a 2-1 lead at the break.

Ruiz and Bromstedt led the way for Tulsa with three shots each, while Sanchez added two, and Kuhler, Vargas and Thomas Wells each had one attempt. Clark logged all 90 minutes between the posts and picked up six saves.

Michigan had a 17-11 lead in shots, including a 7-5 advantage in shots on goal, and a 6-5 edge in corner kicks.

Tulsa will return to action on Sunday, August 26 at #4 Michigan State.  Game time is set for 12:00 pm in East Lansing, Mich.
