Tulsa Men’s Tennis Splits on Opening Day

TULSA, Okla. – The University of Tulsa men's tennis team opened the team portion of the 2018-19 season with a 7-0 sweep over the Bryant Bulldogs, but fell in the nightcap thriller, 4-3 against Texas Tech on Friday at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center

Tulsa kicked off the new year with a bang, blanking the Bryant Bulldogs, 7-0 in the morning match of a Friday doubleheader.
The Golden Hurricane struck early in the doubles matches, as the No. 3 doubles team of Kody Pearson and Daniel Siddall took down Bryant's Grant Pertile and Artur Jorge Ortiz-Garcia, 6-1.
In singles, Siddall clinched his match over the Bulldogs' Michael Plutt, 6-3, 6-4. Soon after, Pearson managed a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Jakubowksi, followed by a Boriss Kamdem win, 7-6(5), 2-6, 6-1.
Tom Thelwall-Jones took down Jorge Ortiz-Garcia in three, 6-3, 6(10)-7, 10-3, while Majed Kilani took Bryant's singles No. 1 Kuhar in three sets, 6-4, 2-6, 6-1. To clinch the shutout for the Golden Hurricane, redshirt-freshman Stefan Hampe managed a three-set thriller victory over the Bulldogs' Guido Argentini, 6-2, 4-6, 10-6.

TU fell in an absolute nailbiter of a match to Texas Tech, who was receiving votes in the latest Oracle ITA top-25 team rankings, 4-3 to split its matches on opening day.
The Red Raiders took the early lead in the match, earning the doubles point as No. 17 Bjorn Thomson and Parker Wynn took down Kilani/Goodger in the No. 1 doubles spot, 6-2. After Kamdem and Thelwall-Jones fell to Jackson Cobb and Tommy Mylnikov, 6-3, the Golden Hurricane would rebound, as Pearson and Siddall took down Texas Tech's Lorenzo Battista and Franco Ribero in tie breaks, 6-5(5).
Tulsa managed a fast start in the singles portion of the match, as Kamdem defeated Battista to even the match, 6-3, 6-2. Kilani, the team captain, would follow suit, quickly dispatching of Wynn, 7-5, 6-2 in the No. 1 spot.
Texas Tech would tie the match back up at 2 after Mylnikov edged out Gooder, 6-3, 3-6, 5-7. Shortly thereafter, Hing defeated No. 70-ranked Thomson 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(4) to pull Tulsa ahead by one.
Artem Kapshuk clinched the match over Pearson, 6(4)-7, 7-5, 6-4 to tie the match back up at 3. In the No. 6 spot, Franco Ribero narrowly defeated Hampe in a three-set thriller, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3, to take the match for the Red Raiders.
Tulsa will get a few days to rest, then return to action on Tuesday at noon CT back inside the Michael D. Case Tennis Center against Mercer.
