Golden Hurricane Bests Louisiana Tech on Day One of Hurricane Invite

TULSA, Okla. – The No. 22 University of Tulsa women's tennis team (1-0) started the spring season with a 7-0 win over Louisiana Tech on day one of the Hurricane Invite on Saturday at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
Tulsa 7, Louisiana Tech 0
On day one of Tulsa's own Hurricane Invite, head coach Dean Orford's squad made quick work of Louisiana Tech inside the Case Center, defeating the Lady Techsters, 7-0.
In doubles, newcomers Manon Meulenberg and Marina Davtyan took down Andrea Perez-Lopez and Leonie Nutz without dropping a game, 6-0. Shortly after, Martha Matoula and Shura Poppe bested Sonia Chen and Claudia Oravcova in the No. 2 doubles spot, 6-1, to clinch the doubles point for TU.
For good measure, No. 4 Martina Okalova/Vera Ploner managed a 6-2 convincing win over Nadja Manjon/Ana Jover to earn Tulsa a flawless doubles section.
Okalova would continue her hot start to the spring, taking down Manjon in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0 to put Tulsa ahead 2-0. Poppe and Matoula would finish at nearly the same time, adding to the TU lead with 6-2, 6-0, and 6-4, 6-0, victories respectively.
At the No. 4 spot, Ploner showed off a strong service game to handle Perez-Lopez, 6-0, 6-1. In similar fashion, freshman Megan Hopton notched a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Nutz at No. 6. In the final singles match of the duel, newcomer Arianna Capogrosso took down Oravcova, 6-4, 6-0 to shut out the Lady Techsters.
Tulsa Singles vs. ORU
Splitting the duel up into two days, the Golden Hurricane took a commanding 5-0 lead into the second day, as Matoula, Ploner, Poppe, Hopton and Meulenberg all took home singles victories.
To kick things off, Poppe managed a 6-0, 6-2 win over Jovana Antonijevic of ORU. Ploner and Matoula finished at nearly the same time, taking home 6-1, 6-0 and 6-3, 6-0 victories to put TU up 3-0 in the match.
Shortly thereafter, Hopton and Meulenberg clinched their No. 4 and No. 5 matches, 6-1, 6-2 and 6-3, 6-1 to push Tulsa out in front 5-0 heading into tomorrow's doubles matches.
The Golden Hurricane will resume action at the Hurricane Invite at 8:30 a.m. CT, starting with a full duel match against Wyoming and finishing doubles against ORU afterward, searching for yet another 3-0 start under head coach Dean Orford.
