HOUSTON — Corey Davis Jr. hit six 3-pointers and scored a game-high 21 points as No. 19/17 Houston defeated visiting Tulsa, 74-56, in the American Athletic Conference opener for both squads on Wednesday night at the Fertitta Center.
Martins Igbanu led the Golden Hurricane (10-4, 0-1) with 18 points and eight rebounds and he was joined in double-figures by 10 points from DaQuan Jeffries. Tulsa was held to a season-low 30.9-percent shooting and scored 20 points in the paint.
Meanwhile, the Cougars (14-0, 1-0) extended their NCAA-leading homecourt winning streak to 27 games. The six 3-pointers for Davis Jr. tied a career high and Houston also got 13 points from freshman Nate Hinton.
The Cougars shot 35.7-percent, but held a 52-40 edge on the glass and scored 18 second-chance points after grabbing nine offensive rebounds.
Jeffries got Tulsa started in the opening minutes with a pair of 3-pointers. The Golden Hurricane defense forced 10 straight missed shots and a pair of turnovers from the Cougars, went scoreless for nearly the first six minutes.
However, a 7-0 run minutes later gave Houston its first lead and it would not trail the rest of the night.
The Hurricane trailed 20-16 before the Cougars caught fire from behind the arc. The home squad hit four triples over the final six minutes of the half to outscore TU 16-9 and take a 36-25 advantage into halftime.
In the second half, the Golden Hurricane cut the deficit to nine points on four occasions but could get no closer. Each push by Tulsa was met with a Houston bucket and the Cougars pulled away over the final seven minutes to score the 74-56 victory.
Tulsa will return home and face USF (10-2, 0-0) at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 5 at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
