
Ploner Advances in Singles Consolation Draw; Clinches Quarterfinals Consolation Spot with Okalova

TULSA, Okla. - Senior Vera Ploner advanced to the second round of the singles consolation draw, and will compete with Martina Okalova in the quarterfinals of the consolation doubles bracket on Friday at the Saint Francis Health System ITA Women's All-American Championships. The Tulsa women's tennis team has been competing at the Case Tennis Center at LaFortune Park throughout the championships.
Ploner would capture her first ranked win of the season, upsetting No. 21 Oleksandra Korashvil of Oklahoma in straight sets 6-3, 6-3.
She would also team up with Okalova in doubles play. The two were scheduled to play on Wednesday, but their match was delayed due to inclement weather. The fifth-ranked Golden Hurricane finally saw their first glimpse action at the All-American Championships on Thursday. However, the senior tandem fell to No. 53 Monica Malinen and Sara Nayar of Colorado, 8-7(6).
Okalova and Ploner bounced back in the afternoon with an 8-4 victory over No. 23 MC Meredith and Eliza Omirou of Wake Forest. The win secured a spot in the quarterfinals, which will be held at the University of Tulsa.
After advancing to the Round of 32 in the women's main draw singles late Wednesday night, No. 73 Okalova suffered a 7-6(4), 7-5 defeat to No. 2 Estela Perez-Somarriba from the University of Miami.
Junior Shura Poppe and sophomore Marina Davtyan lost to No. 15 Natalie Novotna and Rita Pinto of Virginia Tech in the first round of the doubles consolation bracket, 8-5.
Ploner will face No. 23 Kessler McCartney of Florida in her second round match on Friday at 12 noon. The match will be held at the Case Tennis Center at LaFortune Park.
Okalova and Ploner will take on No. 17 Alexa Bortles and Sabina Machalova of Ole Miss at 6:15 p.m. from the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
