Golden Hurricane Rally For Four-Set Win Over Tulane

10/11/2019 11:04:00 PM | Volleyball

Box Score
TULSA, Okla. - The Tulsa volleyball team rallied from a three-point deficit in the fourth set to defeat Tulane [25-20, 20-25, 25-20, 30-28] on Friday at the Donald W. Reynolds Center. Friday's match was the first of a four-game homestand for TU.

With the win, the Golden Hurricane (11-7, 4-1 The American) claim sole possession of second place in the western division. They entered the match tied with the Green Wave (13-5, 3-2).

"I'm really proud of our group because Tulane is a very solid team," said head coach Ryan Wills. "... It took us a little bit of time, but we finally played Tulsa defense in the fourth set. That was a huge piece for us, figuring it out in the fourth set. It was a grind. Our offense was pretty solid for us all night long. That was a huge piece of things, but the adjustments defensively showed a very mature team. I was really proud of them."

Trailing 18-15 in the fourth set, Tulsa outscored Tulane 6-2 to take a 21-20 lead. It would be their first lead in the set since 2-1.

Five Golden Hurricane connected on their swings during the run. Kayley Cassaday and Dilara Gedikoglu cut the deficit to one at 18-17. Maggie Hembree had the third TU kill of the run. After Callie Cook and Hannah Overmyer combined for a block, back-to-back kills from Overmyer and Maddie Rhoder put the Golden Hurricane on top, 21-20.

Tulsa would never trail from that point forward, but continued to exchange points with Tulane until 28-28. Cassaday found an opening, followed by a Green Wave error that allowed the Golden Hurricane to capture match point.

Tulsa held a 58-57 edge in total kills, and in assists, 54-51. The Golden Hurricane also led in digs, 70-62.

Senior setter Mariah Pardo eclipsed 2,500 career assists in the match, finishing with 22.

Gedikoglu set a new career-high in kills with 26.

Roosa Rautio finished with her fourth double-double of the season. She chipped in a game-high 27 assists, to go with 11 digs.

Taylor Horsfall led all players with 27 digs. Cook added 3.5 blocks (one solo block, five block assists).

The Golden Hurricane return to action on Sunday, Oct. 13, as they host Houston (11-9, 5-0) at 1:00 p.m.
