Four Golden Hurricane Post Double-Doubles in Loss to Houston

TULSA, Okla. - Four Golden Hurricane record double-doubles on Sunday, as Houston defeated the Tulsa volleyball team at Donald W. Reynolds Center in four sets [28-26, 25-23, 22-25, 25-23]. Sunday's match featured the top two teams in the American Athletic Conference western division standings. The two teams combined for 38 ties and 22 lead changes in the contest.

The Golden Hurricane (11-8, 4-2 The American) are now in a three-way tie with SMU and Tulane for second in the west. The Cougars (12-9, 6-0) have now won seven consecutive matches, and remain atop the division with a two-game lead.

Tied 15-15 in the fourth set, the Cougars embarked on a 6-1 run to take its largest lead of the game at 21-16. Tulsa would later score on five of six possessions, cutting the deficit to one at 24-23. Houston combined for a block on the final play to capture match point.

The opening set was the most competitive of the match, featuring 17 ties and 12 lead changes. Neither team led by more than two points, which occurred eight times throughout the set. After Diliara Gedikoglu connected on her seventh kill of the game to give Tulsa a 25-24 advantage, Houston ended the match on a 4-1 run.

The Golden Hurricane erased a six-point deficit in the second set for a 22-21 lead. Lily Heyne had two of her season-high 14 kills during the run.

Tulsa shifted the momentum its way in the third set, erasing a four-point deficit. An 8-3 run put the Golden Hurricane on top, 21-18. Gedikoglu tallied three kills for TU, followed by Maggie Hembree with one. Defensively, Hembree and Callie Cook combined for 1.5 blocks (one solo block and one block assist), respectively. Heyne and Kayley Cassaday each registered a block assist.

After the Cougars came within one at 22-21, Tulsa ended the set, scoring three of the final four points. Mariah Pardo found Hembree for the last point of the set.

Gedikoglu tallied 25 kills and a season-high 22 digs for her eighth double-double of the campaign. Heyne added season-highs of 14 kills and 17 digs for her first career double-double.

Roosa Rautio was the third Golden Hurricane to finish with a double-double, postings new season-highs for assists and digs. She eclipsed 30+ assists for the third time this season, finishing with 32. She also added a season-best 17 digs for her fifth double-double of the year. Pardo was the final Golden Hurricane to post double figures in multiple categories. She finished with 24 assists and a season-high 15 digs.

Cook was the third TU player to finish with double-figure kills, adding 11. She also finished with two blocks (two solo, two block assists, one blocking error). Hembree added 2.5 blocks (two solo, three block assists, one blocking error). Taylor Horsfall chipped in a match-high 26 digs.

Tulsa held the advantage in kills (66-53), assists (64-49), and digs (112-95). Both teams had two service aces apiece, and Houston edged the Golden Hurricane in total blocks, 11-9.

Tulsa posted season-highs in kills, total attempts (208), assists, and digs. The 112 digs are tied for fifth all-time in a single match. It ties a mark set against Wyoming during the 1998 season.

With the loss, Tulsa is now 20-8 all-time against Houston. The Golden Hurricane entered the match having won 18 of the last 19 meetings.

The Golden Hurricane continue their homestand on Friday, Oct. 18, against USF (7-13, 1-5).
