TULSA, Okla. - The Tulsa volleyball team staved off USF in the third set on Friday night to capture its third sweep of the season [25-14, 25-13, 25-22] at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
The Golden Hurricane (12-8, 5-2 The American) are 6-2 this season on their home court. The Bulls (7-14, 1-6) have now lost six consecutive matches.
"[USF] has been playing well the last few matches, and have been battling a lot of [teams]," head coach Ryan Wills said. "We showed up in a way tonight that allowed us to not have to battle too much until the third set. That was a good offensive showing for us, especially in transition. I was really proud of our team. We had a lot of good transition swings, allowed our defense to work, and it was a sold night."
"The service line really helped us," Wills added. There were some really crucial moments where we were putting the ball exactly where we wanted to. Getting them out of system, and allowing our defense to work. That was a huge piece to the puzzle because we were starting to struggle offensively in the third set, and they were starting to get hot on a couple things. We put some pressure on them at the service line, and it allowed us to find a way at the end to get the [third set]."
Leading 2-0 in the match, Tulsa watched its 10-6 lead in the third set evaporate, as USF used a 13-7 run for a 19-17 advantage. Following a Golden Hurricane timeout, TU answered scoring five of the next six points to go on top, 22-20. Maddie Rhoder, Kayley Cassaday, and Dilara Gedikoglu each tallied a kill during the run.
USF would trim TU's advantage to within a point at 22-21 and 23-22, but a Callie Cook kill, followed by a Bull attacking error, secured match point for the Golden Hurricane.
Tulsa finished with a .200 hitting percentage, as the Golden Hurricane recorded 41 kills on 100 attempts with 21 errors. The Golden Hurricane held the Bulls to a .019 attacking clip, surrendering 23 kills on 103 total swings and 21 errors.
Gedikoglu paced Tulsa with a game-high 14 kills. Taylor Horsfall led all players with 22 digs, to go with seven assists. Roosa Rautio recorded a match-high 16 assist and had eight digs. Mariah Pardo came off the bench to add 13 dimes and nine digs.
The Golden Hurricane conclude their four-game homestand on Sunday against UCF (13-6, 6-1). Match time is slated for 1 p.m.
