Celebrating 150 Years of College Football
In honor of College Football celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2019, TulsaHurricane.com will recognize some of the most memorable moments and exciting plays in the history of The University of Tulsa football each week throughout the season.
Tulsa is in its 120th season of fielding a football team. The Tulsa gridiron tradition started as Henry Kendall College in 1895 with the first team posting a 1-0-0 record lead by coach Norman Leard. There were a few seasons in the early years that Kendall College did not field a team, but later becoming The University of Tulsa, the Golden Hurricane football teams have amassed 600+ wins in school history.
This 150th College Football Anniversary moment we take a HISTORICAL LOOK this week at the 1942 season when Tulsa had its highest national ranking in school history.
Tulsa's 1942 Team Ranked No. 4 in Nation
Tulsa opened the 1942 season with an 84-0 victory over WACO Air Force Base and went on to shutout its next 5 opponents. The Hurricane went on to post the only perfect regular season in college football with a 10-0 mark that year. It had been rumored that the Hurricane was in line for the Rose Bowl, but when a bowl invitation came, it was from New Orleans and the Sugar Bowl. Tulsa's opponent would be Tennessee.
Tulsa struck first in the January 1 bowl as Glenn Dobbs picked apart the Vols' defense to put the Hurricane up 7-0 on Tulsa's second possession with a 9-yard pass to Cal Purdin. The Volunteers made it 7-6 at halftime, as the PAT was no good. In the third quarter, Tennessee scored 2 points on a safety and added a 4th quarter a 3-yard TD run, but another PAT missed, to take a 14-7 lead and the eventual victory.
Tulsa ended the season with a 10-1 record and ranked 4th in the country.
