Celebrating 150 Years of College Football
In honor of College Football celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2019, TulsaHurricane.com will recognize some of the most memorable moments and exciting plays in the history of The University of Tulsa football each week throughout the season.
Tulsa is in its 120th season of fielding a football team. The Tulsa gridiron tradition started as Henry Kendall College in 1895 with the first team posting a 1-0-0 record lead by coach Norman Leard. There were a few seasons in the early years that Kendall College did not field a team, but later becoming The University of Tulsa, the Golden Hurricane football teams have amassed 600+ wins in school history.
This 150th College Football Anniversary moment we take a HISTORICAL LOOK this week at the Snow Game in the 1991 season.
Tulsa Comeback in Snow Game
Eric Lange kicked the winning field goal against Southern Mississippi on November 2, 1991 in a snowstorm to get bowl eligible (eventually Tulsa received an invitation to the Freedom Bowl). Tulsa trailed 10-0 in the 4th quarter and scored 10 points to tie the game at the 3:50 mark. Tulsa's T.J. Rubley threw a "Hail Mary" pass covering 65 yards to Chris Penn. Penn was tackled at the Southern Miss 25-yard line to stop the clock at 0:01 to set-up the field goal attempt. Lange missed a 32-yarder, but Southern Miss was penalized for illegal participation (12 men on the field). Lange received another opportunity and after his teammates feverishly cleared a spot on the field, he hit a 24-yard field goal for a 13-10 Tulsa victory.
