Three Tulsa players scored in double figures, but the Golden Hurricane dropped a 61-60 decision to Marquette on Saturday afternoon in the final game of the St. Mary's Thanksgiving Classic in Moraga, Calif. TU fell to 3-4 on the season, while MU moved to 6-2 overall.
Down 61-60 with two seconds to play, Alexis Gaulden was at the free throw line, but missed both, and although Rebecca Lescay got a steal on the Golden Eagles inbounds play, there was no time remaining to get a last-second shot off.
"If you were to ask me who you wanted at the free throw line in that situation I'd say Lex every time," Head Coach Matilda Mossman said. "I am proud of our kids and how hard they played. They did everything we asked them to do. We ask our kids to put us in a position to win it and they certainly did that. If we carry this energy and momentum forward good things will happen for this team."
Kendrian Elliott earned her fourth double-double of the season and 10th of her career as she had a team-leading 18 points and 12 rebounds, while Maddie Bittle netted a career-high 16 points, and Lescay added 10. Gaulden finished with five points, pulled down seven rebounds, had seven assists and three steals in the contest.
Tulsa shot a solid 66-percent in the first quarter for a 20-14 advantage over Marquette, and climbed to an eight-point lead, 24-16, at the 7:45 mark of the second quarter off a layup by Alexis Gaulden (8:17) and a pair of free throws made by Rebecca Lescay (7:45).
The Golden Hurricane then went cold, missing their next 12 shots, allowing MU to go on a 13-0 scoring run and TU was held to without a field goal made for 7:50 off the clock. Bittle ended the Tulsa drought on a three-pointer with just 27-seconds remaining in the second half, and Marquette took a 31-27 lead into the locker room as the Hurricane shot just 13-percent in the second frame.
Tulsa started the third quarter with a 7-2 run to take back the lead, 34-33, at the 7:18 mark. The two teams had three more lead changes and a tied score, but the Golden Eagles had a 43-41 advantage with one frame to play.
There were four more lead changes and one more tied score in the final frame, but Marquette ended up on top.
The Golden Eagles were led by Camryn Taylor with 15 points, while Lauren Van Kleunen had 11 and Selena Lott had 10.
Marquette had a narrow 29-28 lead in rebounds, a 12-11 edge in assists and an 8-6 advantage in steals, while TU had a 5-4 edge in blocks.
Tulsa shot 40-percent from the field, including 30-percent from behind the arc and 80-percent from the free throw line, while Marquette shot 43-percent from the field, just 22-percent from behind the arc and 69-percent from the charity stripe.
Tulsa will return to action on Thursday, December 5 at Abilene Christian in Abilene, Texas.
