Pearson's Winning Streak Ends at 2019 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships

11/6/2019 6:28:00 PM | Men's Tennis

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. - Tulsa men's tennis sophomore Kody Pearson saw his six-game winning streak end on Wednesday against Joseph Guillin, the 13th seed from UC Santa Barbara 7-5, 6-1 at the 2019 Oracle International Tennis Association (ITA) National Fall Championships. The men's championships are being played at The Tennis Club at Newport Beach Country Club in California.

The sophomore got off to a strong start in the Round of 64, winning his first two games for an early 2-0 lead in the first set. Guillin would eventually take his first lead of the set at 4-3. The Gaucho's lead would be short-lived, however, as Pearson won the next game to knot the set at 4-4. Following the third tie of the opening set at 5-5, Guillin won the final two sets for a 1-0 lead in the match.

Pearson would take a 1-0 advantage in the second set. That would be his only advantage, as Guillin won the next six games.

Pearson entered the match ranking 96th in the 2019-20 Preseason ITA Division I Men's Individual National Rankings, while Guillin was 28th. The match also marked the second time the Gaucho had faced the Golden Hurricane this year. He played freshman Juan Pablo Cenoz in a singles consolation match at the Saint Francis Health System ITA Men's All-American Championships.

Pearson (6-3 overall) will now compete in the consolation bracket. He is expected to face No. 75 Yuta Kikuchi from California on Thursday at 11:30 a.m. CT
